Here are 21 authentic old wood doors from old European villages that carry the weight of history on their hinges. They show us how doors don’t have to be freshly-painted, “pretty”, or even whole to still function as portals, in the physical and the symbolic meaning of the word.
Let’s walk through these amazing doors. Be warned: They are not always pretty. Some are crooked. Others have lost every last bit of paint they ever had. Most have rusty handles and key locks. Some are missing entire parts altogether.
Yet they are all still functioning doors. What does that tell us? To me it says that these homes don’t need physical strength in order to be protected. These neighborhoods are peaceful. Peaceful enough for people to keep their broken doors because all these doors have to do is just be there and signify the presence of a portal.
Let’s take a look at the doors and then talk about the inspiration they can provide us with.

How to find inspiration in these old wood doors
There are two things I think we should take away from these doors.
First, they give us a glimpse into such awesome design variety. They are all old rustic entryways, yet they offer such a variety in terms of shape, color and plate design. It’s wonderful to see the attention to detail and craftsmanship shining through many so decades of use.
Secondly, these doors inspire us to think about the meaning of “old” in interior design. Yes, most of these are rough around the edges, to say the least. It doesn’t stop them from radiating the essence of the word home and it actually helps in conveying so much more. Looking at these doors, I think about the decades and maybe even centuries of history these homes have gone through. I can imagine the soldiers walking through during the world wars but also the babies born behind these formidable getaways. These doors help tell a story, and an ancient one at that.
You don’t have to add an old vintage door to your home (if you do, I’m sure it’s going to be much prettier than some of these). However, you can use the “power of age” to add layers of history into your home. Old family portraits in black and white or actual vintage items that are hiding in your attic can all play the same role of getting you more connected with the past. After all, we have our roots in the past and strong roots are the key for a healthy leafy branches!
I hope these old wood doors inspire you to bring authentic rustic design elements into your own home decor. Let me know what you think about them in the comments below! If you know others who may be inspired by these old doors, please share this post with them!
